A Day in the Life of a Tyre

If you watch Formula 1 on television, the life of a Bridgestone tyre effectively starts at the beginning of a stint and ends when it is hastily replaced at a pit stop. But there is much more to a tyre’s journey than this.

Tyres live in and around the garage, in the tyre area, and during a Grand Prix weekend the team can use 28 sets of dry tyres, eight sets of intermediates and six sets of wets.

Each car has two sets of prime and two sets of options available for Friday practice, each of which is sent back to Bridgestone. The same happens with the single set of each available for Saturday morning, leaving four sets of each compound for qualifying and the race.

Every tyre is wrapped with an electric blanket which pre-heats it as required, with slick tyres normally heated to around 80°C and rain tyres to 60°C before being used, with heating beginning around three hours before a session.

As well as correct storage, clear identification is a necessity to ensure the right tyres are delivered to the right car even in the high-pressure world of qualifying or the race. Tyre warmers are clearly marked with the driver’s name and a colour-coded sign indicating the type and compound.

So what happens to a used Formula 1 tyre after a session?

First of all it is taken to the back of the garage where the opening task is ‘scraping’, where the soft melted rubber on the top of the tyre is scraped away over a small area to leave a patch of relatively-new-looking tyre.

This gives the Bridgestone technicians a clear area to work, beginning with measurements. Each tyre has a small number of little holes in its surface, around 2mm across, which are used to give accurate wear-rate measurements and these are analysed after the session.

The next step is to prepare the magnesium alloy rims to be fitted with a new tyre, so team tyre specialists remove the balancing weights and clean the rims with plenty of soapy water.

After that, it’s off to Bridgestone for the tyres to be removed from the rims. Bridgestone store the tyres and ultimately return them to their headquarters while the rims can be fitted with new tyres and returned to the Panasonic Toyota Racing garage.

And spare a thought for the tyre guys; aside from the hectic pace of removing and delivering tyres to the garage, there is the weight to consider. The rims weigh around 3kg but add a tyre to that and you are looking at a total weight of around 14kg; not massive on its own but with 168 individual tyres to contend with that’s a serious physical effort.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a new challenge for every aspect of the car but particularly the tyres. Bridgestone has brought the medium and soft compound Potenza tyre, which will have to adapt to a dusty and potentially sandy track surface.

Many features of Yas Island are still under construction so dust and sand is likely to blow across the circuit, meaning Friday practice will see rapidly evolving conditions and improving lap times.

And don’t forget the high temperatures. Air temperatures are around 35°C so track temperatures will be sky high, potentially creating high levels of degradation.

Glock to Renault for 2010?

The German media are suggesting that a deal bringing Timo Glock from Toyota to Renault is 95% done.

Glock has competed in 37 Grands Prix  and has collected 3 podiums across his career with his debut coming in 2004 with Jordan, but he is yet to record a win. He has not participated in the last 2 races and will not start this weekend in Abu Dhabi after a heavy crash at Suzuka.

If Glock signs for Renault he will race alongside Robert Kubica, a deal which has already gone through.

E timpul sa redevenim seriosi, pentru ca problema legata de proiectele de mediu ale firmei Toyota sunt cel putin de mare actualitate. Dupa cum scriam in post-ul anterior, dedicat marelui constructor aspectul cel mai important pentru ascensiunea companiei ar putea fi politica favorabila in relatia cu mediul.

Cautand in site-ul firmei, www.toyota.ro am descoperit prea putine informatii legate proiectele de mediu. Mi-ar placea sa vad poze, filmulete sau editoriale de la evenimentele cu impact pozitiv asupra mediului la care a participat si Toyota, atat pe plan national, cat si pe plan international. Astfel, categoria numita “Toyota si mediul”, inclusa in site ar fi mult mai atractiva pentru oamenii care au mai mult sau mai putin legatura cu mediul.

De asemenea, poate imi doresc sa cumpar o masina, dar nu ma pricep foarte bine la detaliile tehnice ale fiecarui automobil. Mi-ar fi foarte util sa regasesc in site o categorie cu  sfaturi utile pentru achizitionarea  unei masini Toyota.

Si pentru ca nu pot ramane serios un intreg articol, am sa il chem putin pe Gigel, care astazi este “baiat destept de Dorobanti” si isi doreste cea mai scumpa masina pe care o produce Toyota. El este nemultumit ca nu poate vizualiza pretul automobilelor direct pe site. Din pacate, Marioara nu l-a invatat sa foloseasca fisierele de tip PDF.

Totusi, in linii mari site-ul arata cum trebuie sa arate un site al unei marci de succes.

The Yamaha Pas Er

The Pas Er is an power-assisted bicycle that monitors the riders heart rate and adjusts the engine accordingly. The right handle measures the heart rate and assists to keep that heart rate between 110 and 120 (the typical rate for aerobic exercise). The bicycle also regenerates itself during deceleration and downhill riding.

The electric bike is an excellent alternative for maneuvering through a city. Relying on electricity saves riders on gas prices and also overcomes obstacles such as long distances and hills. Truthfully the bike just looks plain awesome. There is no word on a release date for this model but I would like to see the introduction of more approaches to transportion such as the Pas Er.

O campeonato ainda não acabou

Após o GP do Brasil em Interlagos, se viu em muitos lugares como se o campeonato mundial de Formula 1 já estivesse terminado e agora esperar para a temporada 2010. Mas isso não é a realidade, ainda falta o GP dos Emirados Árabes em Abu Dhabi.

E mesmo com o titulo mundial de construtores e pilotos decididos, ainda possui muita coisa para ser resolvida, como a disputa pelo vice, entre Sebastian Vettel e Rubens Barrichello, entre outras colocações dentre os pilotos. A disputa para ocupar o terceiro lugar no pódio pelo mundial de construtores está em aberto e a briga é boa, entre Ferrari e McLaren.

A McLaren (71), somente 1 ponto na frente da Ferrari (70) seguida pela Toyota (54,5), o que deixa claro que a disputa é entre as duas “gigantes” como aconteceu ano passado na decisão do mundial de pilotos e construtores. Como a pista de Abu Dhabi é totalmente desconhecida para todos os pilotos não se pode prever alguma superioridade. Mas sabemos que o carro da Ferrari já foi abandonado e que o Fisichella tem problemas ao pilotar a macchina e a McLaren está com seus pilotos e com menos problemas nos carros.

O carro da RBR que Vettel pilota possui um design mais refinado quanto ao de Rubens Barrichello da Brawn, agora saber qual tipo de engenharia e design do carro a pista favorece.

A corrida nos Emirados Árabes tem tudo para ser uma grande GP, com disputas acirradas, mesmo com o campeonato para ser decidido, agora aguardar dia 30/10 para começar e ver quem pode ter alguma vantagem em Abu Dhabi

Lexus LFA, Pesaing Ferrari

Tokyo, 22 Oktober 2009 - Toyota, Rabu (21/10) kemarin secara resmi meluncurkan varian sportnya yaitu Lexus LF-A. Mobil yang mulai diperkenalkan sejak 2003 dan disebut-sebut sebagai pesaing berat dari Lamborghini dan Ferrari 599 itu diluncurkan di arena Tokyo Motor Show (TMS).

Menurut sumber Toyota seperti yang dikutip worldcarfans, sedan sport mewah itu dibekali mesin 5000cc V10 yang yang mampu melesat hingga 9.000rpm. Maklum tenaga yang dihasilkan oleh mesin tersebut mencapai 550 daya kuda.

Akselerasi kecepatan dari 0-100 kilometer per jam dicapai dalam waktu 3,7 detik. Kecepatan maksimum yang bisa dicapai 325 kilometer per jam. Untuk kenyamanan dan keselamatan, mobil ini menggunakan rem rotor berbahan keramik karbon yang dipasang dibalik roda beukuran 20 inchi.

Sementara sistem suspensinya, menggunakan double wishbones dan coil-over damper serta dilengkapi multi-link arrangement di bagian depan. Sedangkan di bagian belakang menggunakan coil-over damper.

Sasis Lexus LF-A ini dibuat dari campuran karbon sehingga selain ringan juga kuat dalam meredam getaran mesin yang berkapasitas besar tersebut. Namun, bodi mobil dibuat dari bahan aluminium, sehingga ringan namun kuat.

Varian ini mulai diproduksi pada Desember mendatang hingga 2012 mendatang. “Untuk tahap awal, ddalam dua hingga tahun mendatang Lexus hanya akan memproduksi 500 unit. Tetapi nila penjualannya bagus, produksinya aka ditambah,” ujar sumber Toyota.

Mobil dengan dimensi panjang 4,51 meter, lebar 1,9 meter, dan tinggi 1,22 meter itu dibanderol mulai US$ 375.000 atau sekitar Rp 3,246 miliar (kurs 1 dolar = Rp 9.340)

The Car of the Future

Designed for short distant driving, the electric motor can travel around 90km (50 miles) at up to 100km/h (60 mph), making it most useful in the city.

Rather than a conventional steering wheel, Toyota has fitted the FT-EV II with joystick-like controls which means there are no conventional controls such as accelerator, brake pedal… or even a steering wheel.

Key to the FT-EV II’s space efficiency is careful placement of the battery and electric motor, freeing up space and leg room at the front of the car.

Toyota has also paid attention to improving vision with a large windscreen and airy cabin feel.

Even the LED tail lights form part of the rear vision, allowing the driver to see through them when reversing.

A Burst of News - Hot Supercar Designs, Toyobaru Revealed, electric Audis and a new Porsche 928?

Welcome one and all to another burst of automotive news, straight from the broken faucet of the Internet and into your unsuspectingly open eyes!

Let’s start off with something sexy. Over the last couple of weeks, no fewer than three boner-inducing artist’s concepts have appeared for potential supercars from some of the world’s foremost makers of excitiong cars. Now, unfortunately, none of these are anywhere near cleared for production – they’re just artistic visions of potential supercars. But at least we can imagine ourselves in them – which is all most of us would be doing if they were real, anyway.

First up is a concept for a successor to the former fastest car in the world, the McLaren F1. McLaren recently unveiled their first all-new car since the F1; named the MP4-12C, it’s designed to fight in the highly competitive supercar middleweight category, against such Worthy Opponents as the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Porsche 911 Turbo/GT2, the Audi R8 5.2, the successor to the Lamborghini Gallardo, and Stephen Colbert.

McLaren has stated the MP4-12C (which sounds more like a submachine gun than a car to us) will occupy the middle of their three-supercar lineup, leaving room above and below it. With that in mind, Coventry University student Matt Williams whipped up this concept called the LM5, a hypercar to fit above the MP4 and challenge the Bugatti Veyron for global supremacy. (Imaginary power comes from a 700-horsepower version of the BMW M5’s V10.)

Next up comes a design for a potential Porsche supercar to succeed the Carrera GT of a few years ago. Crafted by an Iranian designer named Emil Baddal, this exotic-looking machine currently goes without any imaginary powertrain at all. (It also goes without a name, so I guess Baddal is one of those artists who likes to title his works “Untitled” because he thinks it’s avant-garde.)

Since Baddal apparently wants to leave the details up to the imagination, I’m going to call it the “Rapier,” after the runner-up name for the F-22 fighter, and pretend it’s powered by a 745-horsepower 6.8 liter turbocharged V12 based off the Panamera’s V8, connected to an all-wheel-drive system by a seven-speed PDK transmission. Then I will pretend to drive it across the country to Jennifer Aniston’s house and take her out for a fancy dinner before parking on Mulholland Drive and getting busy on the hood.

Baddal also brings us the third in our list of imaginary playthings, a real-life version of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept from this year’s Frankfurt show. That concept was “propelled” by a 163-horsepower turbodiesel 1.5 liter three cylinder connected to a pair of electric motors; sources claim the production version, rumored to go by “Z10,” would run a 450-horsepower twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine (also rumored to be the engine of the next M3). Combined with a low curb weight, the Z10 ought to be as ballsy as a triple shout of Jager.

But enough fiction. If you’ve been following this site for a while, you’ve probably read our posts on the “Toyobaru,” the sport coupe under joint development by Toyota and Subaru. Well, the wraps have finally come off, and it looks pretty sweet.

Currently going by the name of the Toyota FT-86 Concept (excitement fail), the car is powered by Subaru’s 2.0 liter boxer four-cylinder engine, hopefully putting out at least 200 horsepower. Supposedly, the car will be rear-wheel-drive only; whether that’ll preclude it being sold as a Subaru in the States remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see an AWD system slung under there for the U.S. market.

The production FT-86 will reportedly be coming our way in 2011, hopefully priced around $20,000. RWD or AWD, it looks like it’ll be a great car – it’s about time manufacturers started making more small, fun cars for less money.

Vying for the FT-86’s recession-paralyzed youth, though, will be a similarly priced sports coupe from Honda – and it’s a hybrid, which scores you bonus points but means you have to scrape Ed Begley Jr. off your car more often. (He’s like a starfish!)

Successor to the beloved CR-X hatch of eons ago, the CR-Z (I guess CR-Y just sounded too sad) will only pack a hybrid powerplant, so don’t expect many smoky burnouts. Rumor has it the powertrain will be a 1.5 liter four-cylinder connected to Honda’s usual hybrid gear and your choice of six-speed stick or CVT automatic; expect somewhere around 125-150 combined horsepower, a 0-60 time of around seven seconds, and moderate-to-heavy smug levels.

But there’s more news from Subie-land these days – and this next tidbit is a bit…unexpected. Apparently, Motor Trend has named the 2010 Subaru Outback its SUV of the Year. To which we at CCO respond…really?


As readers know, we really like Subarus. They’ve been making tremendous strides in quality without sacrificing their core values, and remain some of the best cars in their price range. And the Outback, with its elevated stance and versatile AWD, does offer most of the ability of a sport-ute while retaining most of the virtues of a car.

But that’s because it is a car.

Now, I’m sure Motor Trend will say the line between cars and SUVs is blurrier than ever, and that the newest Outback features enough differences from the regular Legacy that it should qualify as a separate category.  Sorry, MT. We love ya, but the Outback is a car. To paraphrase our well-spoken president, you can put all the lipstick on a pig you want, but she’s still Sarah Palin – and you can put all the off-road trappings you want on a car, but it’s still a station wagon. In our minds, the winner should have been the Audi Q5.

Speaking of Audi, some good news from our friends in Ingolstadt. According to AutoExpress, Audi will be bringing the electric e-tron concept from the Frankfurt show to production as a new smaller sports car called the R4.

Reportedly, the R4 will be based on the production version of VW’s Concept BlueSport, a small diesel-powered roadster from this year’s Detroit show. No idea what sort of output we should expect from the production electric R4, but given that the concept’s 3,319 lb-ft of torque could probably fling the space shuttle into orbit, it’ll probably be a mite less when it lands on our shores around 2012. (There will likely also be gas-powered version, for those of us lucky enough to still have access to fossil fuels after the zombiocalypse of 2011 price of gas goes up. Yeah. That’s all.)

But if electric-powered sports cars aren’t your bag, how about a convertible Porsche Panamera? No, the Germans aren’t bringing back the four-door convertible. That’s not coming back until somebody goes back in time and saves JFK. But according to Automotive News, a topless two-door version of the Panamera will be hitting the streets sometime in the next couple of years. No word yet on whether they’ll also offer a two-door coupe version to combat the Mercedes-Benz CL and BMW 6-series, but given Porsche’s 928 filled a similar GT coupe role from 1978 to 1995, you’d probably be safe putting down a deposit…just in case.

Or, if you’d prefer something equally luxurious but a bit more insane sensible, Automotive News also says Aston Martin is considering putting its Toyota/Scion-based Cygnet runabout into production. For around $32,000, drivers could have an Aston Martin the size of a Smart car with the same Toyota suspension and drivetrain as the iQ upon which it’s based. Aston Martin engineers say they got the idea after watching Daniel Craig get whipped in the balls in Casino Royale.

"The world is gonna know you died designing a ridiculous car!"

Still, if you decide to spend your thirty-two grand on a Cygnet instead of, say, a Mustang GT, at the very least you’re less likely to see one of Chevrolet’s new Caprice police cars in your rear view mirror. For those of you who just exploded at the thought of a Chevy version of the wonderful Pontiac G8, sorry to burst your bubble, but the G8’s still marked for termination as of this writing.

Those of you who’re envisioning a four-door Camaro, though, are much closer to the mark – like the Camaro, the Caprice is based off GM’s Zeta platform. However, don’t get too caught up in dreams of drag-racing with the wife and kids; the Caprice will only be available to police here in the States. (It’s available for civilians in the Middle East, because apparently GM easily confuses that region with the Mid-West.)

Loaded with a 355-hp 6.0 liter V8 mated to a six-speed auto, the Caprice should run 0-60 in the mid five-second range while driving up police academy recruitment from Pennsylvania to Nevada. Expect to be checking your six for them in 2011; V6 powered versions will be available in 2012, but…why?

Toyota Mark X, Penantang BMW 5

Tokyo, 20 Oktober 2009 - Toyota Jepang telah meluncurkan redisain Toyota Mark X. Sedan baru itu akan diproduksi dalam dua tipe mesin V6, yaitu 2.500 cc yang mampu menyemburkan tenaga maksimum 200 daya kuda.

Mesin ini, sebut Toyota seperti yang dikutip autoworld dan wolrdcarfans.com diadopsi mesin Lexus IS250. Tipe kedua adalah mesin berkapasitas 3.500 cc, d yang mampu mencapai tenaga maksimum yang dihasilkan mencapai 314 daya kuda. Mesin tersebut diadopsi dari mesin Lexus GS350. ”Keduanya menggunakan sistem transmisi otomatis dengan enam percepatan,” tutur sumber Toyota.

Sementara, tingkat akselerasi kecepatan dari 0 -100 kilometer per jam dicapai pada 8,4 detik. Mobil yang akan dipamerkan pada Tokyo Motor Show 24 tu hanya butuh satu liter bahan bakar untuk 13 kilometer jarak yang ditempuh. ”Sedangkan mesin 3.500 cc jauh lebih kuat dan halus meski irit bahan bakar,”

Kapasitas bagasi yang mencapai 4.800 liter mampu untuk memuat empat tas stick golf. Sementara, fitur keselamatan berkendara yang ada di mobil ini antara lain, tujuh airbag, sistem pengaman bila terjadi tabrakan, sistem adaptive pada lampu depan, intelligent parking assist, dan masih banyak lagi.

Sedangkan di interior, terdapat perangkat sistem navigasi HDD, 12 speaker plus saluran televisi digital terrestrial 12 inci. Dan balutan kulit pada jok semakin menambah kesan mewah yang memiliki panjang 4,73 meter ini.

Soal kenyamanan suspensi? Tak perlu diragukan. dengan front double-wishbone dan rear multilink suspension menjadikan kenyamanan berkendara semakin mantap. Ihwal harga, sumber Toyota menyebut, sedan yang disebut sebagai saudara dekat Lexus IS dan GS itu akan dibanderol sekitar 2,4 – 3,8 juta Yen atau sekitar 17,6 – 28,1 ribu poundseterling.

Rush Facelift, Karya Kreasi Anak Bangsa

Luncurnya Toyota Rush Facelift nyatanya membawa sejumlah misi. Model asli kreasi anak bangsa ini membuat pihak Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) harus bisa menyakinkan konsumennya agar terpikat. Meski hanya facelift, pihak TAM tetap menaikkan harganya, karena memang ada perubahan mendasar pada mobil ini, seperti penyegaran pada wajah baru Rush di sisi luar bagian depan.

TAM mengklaim, Rush Facelift jauh lebih gahar berkat ubahan wajah depan serta grill-nya. Ya, keunikan pada mobil ini memang terletak pada grill jaring warna hitam yang kali ini lebih bergaya, berhias palang tengah dan list grill yang berlapis krom. Pada fog lamp pun mendapat sentuhan yang sama. Bahkan tak hanya dihias krom, demi menjaga dari benturan ringan pada Rush Facelift, dibekali juga pelindung bumper depan dan belakang.

Sejauh ini, Rush masih stabil di angka penjualannya. Di kelasnya, mobil ini memimpin pasar hingga Agustus 2009 dengan angka penjualan 8.089 unit (46.8%). Dengan tagline “Unleash Your Self”, membuat TAM makin percaya diri Rush akan mampu bersaing dalam menarik minat konsumen untuk membelinya.

Berikut adalah range harga mobil ini, untuk tipe New 1500 G Manual dilepas seharga Rp 186,2 Juta, model New Manual S dibandrol Rp 195,3 Juta, sementara model Mew Rush Automatic S dilepas dengan harga Rp 209,3 Juta.

Jika dilihat dari harga tersebut tentu ada sedikit kenaikan dibanding model pendahulunya. Bisa disimpulkan bila kenaikan tipe S automatic sebesar Rp 1,2 juta, tipe S Manual Rp 1,2 juta, dan tipe G Manual Rp 1,4 juta. Meski begitu kita patut bangga karena ini adalah hasil kreasi anak bangsa.

Toyota Prius comienza a rodar en Chile

Ya comienza la venta de uno de los autos mas esperados por los capitanes planetas en Chile. Sí, a fines de octubre se comenzará a vender el primero de los autos Híbridos que se comercializa en el mundo, el Toyota Prius, que llega con su tercera generación y se distingue por su bajo consumo, especialmente en ciudad.

El Prius de 2010 gasta menos que el de 2006, pero no es más rápido en ciertas circunstancias a pesar de su mayor potencia. Todas las versiones llevan de serie siete airbag (conductor y acompañante, de cabeza delanteros y traseros, laterales delanteros y de rodilla para el conductor), control de estabilidad, faros antiniebla, climatizador y radio CD MP3 con entrada auxiliar para fuentes externas, entre otros elementos.

El modelo 2010 puede tener unos faros de diodos luminosos (LED) para el haz de cortas (un elemento que  está disponible en vehículos como el Lexus LS 600h, el RX 450h y el Audi R8), aunque sólo en la versión más equipada (Executive). Alumbran mucho mejor que los del Prius anterior pero podrían ser mejores por intensidad y campo de alumbrado; la principal ventaja frente a unos de xenón es que consumen menos energía.

También puede tener asientos con calefacción (de serie en las versiones Executive) y techo panorámico de cristal, opcional con cualquier nivel de equipamiento salvo el Eco. Este techo tiene la peculiaridad de que su mitad delantera, la que se abre, es transparente, y en la otra mitad hay células fotovoltaicas que transforman la energía solar en eléctrica, que se utiliza para ventilar el habitáculo cuando se deja el coche al sol (algo que tienen modelos de Audi, Lancia, SEAT o Skoda, por ejemplo). Además, el aire acondicionado se puede conectar desde el mando a distancia, para refrigerar el interior antes de entrar en él (3 minutos antes de iniciar la marcha).

Toyota apresenta versão três-portas do Land Cruiser Prado

No Salão de Frankfurt, a Toyota apresentou o reestilizado Land Cruiser. No entanto, o SUV chegou apenas com carroceria de cinco portas. Agora, a marca japonesa divulgou as primerias imagens do modelo de três portas, com visual um pouco mais esportivo e carroceria compacta.

Com relação ao Land Cruiser alongado, ele mantém o desenho interno, mas oferece espaço para apenas cinco ocupantes – contra sete do irmão maior. O estilo ficou mais esportivo, com linhas mais retas, inspiradas nos últimos modelos da marca. Ele chega para enfrentar a versão curta da Pajero Full.

Toyota iQ 1.3

Nota di Pao: Come già detto più volte (Vedi alla categoria Smart & Toyota) mi sembra che la Toyota abbia toppato; non dico nulla sulla macchina di per sè, però resto dell’idea che sia una 2+2 e non una 4 posti, con un prezzo simile a quello delle Smart alle quali è difficile fare concorrenza, visto appunto il prezzo per avere di fatto una macchina simile.

Questa versione, un 1.300 da 99 cavalli allontana ulteriormente la iQ dalla possibilità di essere un’auto come un’altra , relegandola nella nicchia delle piccole (ma molto care). Ancora dopo 10 anni la Smart paga lo scotto per l’errata definizione di macchina trendy, la iQ vuole seguirne le tracce? Vero è che per molti la Smart (come la Mini, la iQ, la 500 Abarth) possa essere un’auto per porsi al di sopra della media, ma vero anche che chi la usa veramente sa apprezzare le sue doti.

Obiezioni tipo ha solo 2 posti lasciano il tempo che trovano. A parte che la si prende anche per quello, anche le Ferrari da 180.000 € hanno 2 soli posti, vanno a 50 kmh in città, bevono come spugne ed inquinano in pari misura…  Certo, se uno pensa all’apparire invece che all’Essere… …

Che poi, c’è da chiedersi perchè una famiglia composta da 2 persone debba prendere (magari come seconda auto) un’auto a 4 o 5 posti, se non gli serve… Non è mica che quandi si è in 3 si prenda la monovolume da 7 posti…

Quasi cento cavalli (99 per la precisione), una coppia di 123 Nm a 4.400 giri/min, 5,1 litri/100 km di consumo e CO2 a 120 g/km: questo il biglietto da visita della iQ 1.3, nelle concessionarie Toyota da fine ottobre. La nuova motorizzazione va a collocarsi al vertice della gamma, e non solo per le caratteristiche del propulsore.

La iQ 1.3 è infatti offerta in un unico allestimento, l’Executive, che comprende, tra gli altri, cerchi di lega da 16″, clima automatico, radio Cd con lettore Mp3, Smart Entry con cornice chiave in tinta con la carrozzeria, che per la nuova iQ sarà grigio cenere, per distinguerla, almeno al lancio, dalla sorellina minore equipaggiata con il tre cilindri da un litro.

Di serie la iQ 1.3 monta un cambio manuale a sei marce dotato di dispositivo stop & start. A richiesta si può avere il Multidrive, un automatico a variazione continua che fa lievitare di 500 euro il prezzo, fissato in 15.250 euro chiavi in mano. Ed è proprio con questo cambio che l’abbiamo guidata tra gli antichi palazzi di Firenze e lungo il nastro d’asfalto che sale a Fiesole, una discreta pendenza che è bastata a far apprezzare quel pizzico di grinta in più che il motore più potente garantisce alla piccolissima Toyota che, se con le sue dimensioni è l’ideale per le strade strette dei centri storici e quelle trafficate delle grandi città, ambisce anche a uscire dall’ambito strettamente urbano.

La presentazione della iQ 1.3 ha offerto l’occasione al nuovo amministratore delegato di Toyota Motor Italia, Massimo Gargano, di fare il punto sui programmi della Casa giapponese, che chiude il 2009 con ben undici tra prodotti completamente nuovi, restyling e aggiornamenti. A novembre, per esempio, sarà la nuova generazione della Land Cruiser a esordire sul nostro mercato.

Per la seconda metà del 2010 è attesa invece la Auris ibrida. Del resto la tecnologia ibrida continuerà a essere la risposta Toyota alla richiesta di carburanti alternativi, economici ed ecocompatibili. In altre parole, il colosso nipponico non intende “aprire” al Gpl.

I can’t speak for the jollity of the apes — though the grease monkeys in the bays, or, more usually, slouching around outside the bays, did seem unusually prone to loud laughter — but this boy most certainly did experience grief as the minutes ticked by, then hours, as I waited for the Toyota mechanics to change the oil, etc on Mrs NiceWork’s Camry.

Nor hours made any shorter by the blaring of the old-fashioned, cube-shaped TV, tuned to the bawling announcers on that Pee-wee Playhouse news channel called CNN, and adjusted to air-raid warning volume.

My new Phancy-Phone helped brighten a few moments. See the photo up there: Ha ha. That’s me in sihouette taking a picture with my Phancy Phone of the shadow on the floor cast by the lettering in the window. Ha ha. Ha Ha.

The keys were placed back in my trembling some 5.25 hours after they were first surrendered. The auto, presumably, was now safer. The driver, until the Toyota was turned over to its usual pilot, was not, having been driven past madness, past road-rage, and well into the red zone of Auto Parts and Services Waiting Room Rage.

But I’m better now thanks for asking. Two krautdogs from Wienerschnitzel expedited the return to society.

Connect an iPod to a Toyota Stereo

GP Brasil


Dia 18 de outubro é dia de torcer pelo Brasil. Todos os anos, a cidade de São Paulo tem o prazer em sediar a etapa brasileira de Fórmula 1. O autódromo Carlos Pace, em Interlagos, é onde ocorre o Grande Prêmio do Brasil, e fique na expectativa pois o campeonato mundial de pilotos será decidido aqui.

A corrida acontece dia18 de outubro, sendo a penúltima do campeonato. Os ingressos já estão sendo vendidos, muitas alas já estão com seus ingressos esgotados, então, se você ainda desejar assistir a corrida, corra! Contar com cambistas nesta hora não é uma boa idéia.

Informações ao público

São três dias de evento. Os treinos livres acontecem na sexta, dia 16, o treino classificatório no sábado, e a corrida no domingo. É importante avisar que não é possível comprar ingressos apenas para domingo. O público pode comprar somente para os três dias ou para o treino de sábado e a corrida de domingo.

Os organizadores do evento ressaltam que o único site oficial do GP Brasil é o www.gpbrasil.com.br, onde é possível adquirir os ingressos com total segurança. A pedido do público, as vendas tiveram início em dezembro do ano passado para que algumas facilidades fossem possíveis, como um parcelamento maior no cartão de crédito.

No site, ainda é possível adquirir pacotes de viagem que dão direito a hotel, ingresso e translado direto para o Autódromo.

Importante ressaltar que a aquisição dos convites pela web só é possível através do cartão de crédito. Os ingressos disponíveis são dos seguintes setores: A, B, D, E, F, G, M e V. Valores variam de acordo com as datas e serviços que cada setor oferece. Dos locais citados acima, o ingresso mais barato sai a R$ 526,00 para sábado e domingo, no Setor A, e o mais caro a R$ 2.220,00 para sexta, sábado e domingo, no Setor E.

É possível ainda adquirir ingressos na bilheteria do autódromo no caso de toda a cota da internet não ser comercializada. A provável venda nas bilheterias de Interlagos acontece de 10 a 15 de outubro, e neste caso, os bilhetes podem ser comprados apenas com dinheiro.

Toyota to recall 3.8 million cars -- largest US recall in its history

Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) said it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States, the company’s largest-ever U.S. recall, to address problems with a removable floor mat that could cause accelerators to get stuck and lead to a crash. The recall will involve popular models such as the Toyota Camry, the top-selling passenger car in America, and the Toyota Prius, the best-selling gas-electric hybrid.

Toyota said it was still working with officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to find a remedy to fix the problem and said owners could be notified about the recall as early as next week. Toyota spokesman Irv Miller said until the company finds a fix, owners should take out the removable floor mat on the driver’s side and not replace it.
Toyota and the government issued separate warnings to owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about the safety problems tied to the floor mats.

“This is an urgent matter,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. “For everyone’s sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration.”

The recall will affect 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.

Toyota’s previously largest U.S. recall was about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 to fix a steering issue. The company declined to say how many complaints it had received about the accelerator issue.

NHTSA said it had received reports of 102 incidents in which the accelerator may have become stuck on the Toyota vehicles involved.

The Japanese automaker warned owners that if they think their vehicle is accelerating out of control, they should check to see whether their floor mat is under the pedal. If a driver can’t remove the floor mat, Toyota advises drivers to step on the brake pedal with both feet until the vehicle slows and then try to put it into neutral and switch the ignition to accessory power.

For vehicles with engine start/stop buttons, Toyota said the engine can be shut off by holding the button down for three seconds.

The safety concern was prompted by a fiery crash in California that killed four family members in August near San Diego. The crash killed California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor, 45, and three others on State Route 125 in Santee.

The runaway car was traveling at more than 120 mph when it hit a sport utility vehicle, launched off an embankment, rolled several times and burst into flames.

In mid-September, Toyota ordered 1,400 Toyota and Lexus dealers nationwide to ensure that each new, used and loaner vehicles had the proper floor mats and that the mats were properly secured.

In September 2007, Toyota recalled an accessory all-weather floor mat sold for use in some 2007 and 2008 model year Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Camry vehicles because of similar problems.
